ISLAMORADA, Fla. – A sport fishing trip off the Florida Keys for a 12-year-old boy from Florida has become the 9,000th local wish granted by Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. The trip got underway Thursday.

Michael LaMore from Fort Pierce is diagnosed with ventricular septal defect, a heart condition.

LaMore chose the fishing trip as his wish because of his love for the ocean and a desire to see sea creatures and tropical fish.

LaMore fished aboard the charter boat Bad Habit, skippered by Captain Scott Keller, his mother, grandmother and cousin.

Aside from the fishing trip, LaMore's experience also included a snorkeling excursion, visits to Islamorada attractions and shopping at a local outdoors retailer.

About 62 Make-A-Wish organizations across America grant wishes to children who have life-threatening medical conditions. The South Florida chapter, which includes 13 Florida countries and the U.S Virgin Islands, has become the fourth to have fulfilled at least 9,000 wishes.
