Miami-Dade police said Rodriguez waited for Alina Carrera, 47, inside the parking lot of her apartment complex Sept. 10 and shot her multiple times.

Authorities responded to the Sunrise at Sunset apartment complex at Southwest 152nd Avenue and Southwest 75th Street and pronounced Carrera dead at the scene.

Police said Carrera had recently separated from her husband, and they have two sons together, the youngest 16 years old.

Police said the couple's children were asleep at the time of the incident and didn't witness the shooting.

Police said Rodriguez shot himself after he killed Carrera. He was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery.
