Man charged in Craigslist user's robbery in Weston

Broward Sheriff's Office wants Craiglist users to meet strangers at police station

Thieves continue to use websites such as Craigslist to target their victims.

This is why Broward Sheriff's Office announced Monday that Craigslist users should consider using their station in Weston as a meeting point.

"When selling items online, keep in mind that not all buyers are legitimate," BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter said. "Whenever possible, consider meeting strangers in a safe place."

BSO's Weston district office will begin to serve as a meeting place for buys and sellers in the area Tuesday.

Most recently, Nicolas Gomez thought he was meeting with Abayomi Abimbola to sell him an iPhone 5. But what he didn't know was that Abimbola was not planning on paying him for it.

Abimbola "grabbed it, jumped back into his car and fled," Carter said in a statement.

Gomez was able to see the tag on the car. Police caught Abimbola, who is now facing a charge of grand theft. Police believe Abimbola may have done this before, so they were asking victims to contact Det. Mark Copley at 954-321-4738.
