HIALEAH, Fla. ā Police said a man walked away from a crash Saturday that killed a 66-year-old woman and left a family devastated.
Miguel Gutierrez said he was behind the wheel of a sports utility vehicle Saturday evening. Inside was his mother-in-law, Amelia Caridad Diaz, and four other passengers.
As the SUV came to the intersection of West Second Avenue and 20th Street, a white Nissan ran the stop sign and crashed into the the family's vehicle, police said.
Gutierrez said the man driving the Nissan never stepped on the brakes. The impact was so strong that it flipped the SUV, launching Diaz from the vehicle and killing her.
Police said as Diaz lay dying, the driver of the Nissan, Ernesto Izquierdo Gonzalez, 25, walked away.
"I hope they punish whoever's responsible," Gutierrez said.
Police said witnesses followed Gonzalez, who went to a store a couple of blocks away from the scene.
"They informed police where he was," Hialeah police spokesman Carl Zogby said.
After initially resisting, Gonzales was caught and arrested, police said.
Back at the crash scene, flowers and candles mark the spot where a loving mother lost her life.
"It's a tragedy, but at least we have the culprit in custody," Zogby said.
Gonzalez faces charges including resisting an officer without violence and driving with a suspended license.
