Man faces family of hit-and-run victim in court

Max Francois, 28, ordered held on $75,000 bond

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man accused of striking a 15-year-old girl with his car and then leaving the scene faced the girl's family members Friday in court.

Max Francois, 28, faces one count of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in a death.

Police said Jaliah Cross was struck about 9 p.m. Monday while she was crossing the street in the area of Northwest 11th Street and 15th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

Her family said the Dillard High School sophomore was walking home from a convenience store.

Francois' attorney, as well as his mother and girlfriend, asked a Broward County judge to set a reasonable bond for his client.

Judge John "Jay" Hurley set Francois' bond at $75,000 and ordered that he be placed on house arrest if he bonds out.

Francois turned himself in to authorities Thursday after they received a tip which led to his house, where they found the Ford Mustang believed to have been involved in the crash.
