Man hospitalized after Hialeah police-involved shooting

Woman says Javier Diaz was shot outside Publix

HIALEAH, Fla. – A man remained in Jackson Memorial Hospital after he was shot by a police officer outside a Hialeah Publix.

The shooting happened at 1290 W. 68th Street about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. The man's condition wasn't immediately released.

Suzanna Lopez identified the man as Javier Diaz, her 30-year-old cousin. Police haven't confirmed the man's name.

"He's under custody and we can't see him," she said.

It's unclear what led up to the shooting. Investigators are looking into whether it began as an attempted robbery or carjacking.

"We see two people arguing -- they were right there -- and one guy tell him, 'Hey, let me get your car,'" said Jonathan Rodriguez.

"I am surprised. He's made mistakes in the past, but it's been four years that he's been trying to do good," said Lopez.
