Man sets mattress on fire, threatens to jump from building, police say

Edwin Innis facing 1st-degree arson charge

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A 23-year-old man was taken into custody after he set his mattress on fire in the fifth-floor hallway of his apartment building in Miami Beach, police said.

According to the arrest report, Edwin Innis had gotten into an altercation with his mother at their apartment at 7801 Abbott Ave. on Sunday night, shortly before he started the fire.

Police said when officers arrived Innis threatened to jump off the railing on the fifth floor of the building if anyone approached him.

Eventually, hostage negotiators were able to talk Innis off the railing and placed him into custody.

According to the arrest report, Innis admitted that he placed his mattress in the hallway, poured alcohol on it and  set it on fire.

Innis is charged with first-degree arson.
