Man shot during domestic dispute in Fort Lauderdale

Witnesses say victim went on rampage in pickup truck, tried to run over ex-girlfriend's family

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man shot his roommate during a domestic dispute Wednesday morning in Fort Lauderdale, police said.

The shooting occurred outside a home on Southwest 22nd Street.

Witnesses told Fort Lauderdale police the shooting victim went on a rampage and tried to run over a family with a pickup truck, plowing through a neighbor's fence and crashing into the home.

Surveillance video captured the moment before shots were fired.

A man who didn't want to give his name told Local 10 News the man behind the wheel of the truck was his mother's ex-boyfriend. He said they had recently separated, and when that man came back to pick up his belongings, he pulled out a knife before getting into his truck.

"Dude tried to hit me, tried to hit my mom (and) tried to hit my brother-in-law," the man told Local 10. "It was a life-and-death situation."

Fearing for his life, a family member pulled out a gun and shot the man.

The victim was taken to a hospital, but he is expected to survive.

Police are investigating the incident.
