Man shot in attempted robbery in Miami dies

Police: Man sitting near car ambushed by men in attempted robbery

MIAMI – Police are searching for three men who gunned down a grandfather in front of his own home.

The victim was in the driveway of his home in 1200 block of Northwest 34th Street, relaxing in his maroon Cadillac that was parked in the driveway.

Gunshots rang out and the victim fell to the ground.

"He was, like, minding his own business and the guys came and they just shot him," said Roberto Aracena, a witness to the crime who saw the men jump a fence and run away.

Aracena watched as neighbors ran to the aid of the victim.

"The guy was laying down and they said, 'Come help,' so the guy called the cops and they came and helped him," said Aracena.

The victim, said to be in his 70s, was rushed to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memoria Hospital, where he died during surgery.

"He's a sweet older man who always says hello, very nice, very neighborly," said neighbor Elizabeth Murray.

The shooting is believed to be the result of an attempted robbery. Detectives think the suspects may have been after the victim's jewelry.

"He wears chains and rings and things like that but who doesn't," said Murray.

The victim was found with his jewelry still in tact but a weapon he was known to always carry was missing. Detectives are trying to determine if the attempted robbers shot the man with his own gun after failing to get the jewelry.

Police have not released a description of the shooters. No arrests have been made. Crime scene detectives worked the scene for much of the night.
