MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A man who barricaded himself inside an apartment building Wednesday in Miami Beach has been released from jail on bond and immediately placed in a mental facility under Florida's Baker Act.
Joseph Jorczak, 34, barricaded himself inside his Meridian Avenue apartment Wednesday when police arrived to take him into custody.
According to an arrest report, Jorczak posted numerous threatening comments about Miami Beach Community Church on social media from Nov. 17 through Tuesday.
"I think he's unstable right now, and if he's out, then there's no telling what he's capable of doing," Harold Thompson, senior pastor of the church, told Local 10 News.
Police said Jorczak also directed his threats at the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and posted that the church was "filled with a bunch of sick homosexuals."
"The homosexuals at the Miami Beach Community Church taught me you cannot trust the L.G.B.Y. (sic) community. They are nasty people. They are a bunch of (expletive) at that church," one post read.
Police said Jorczak claimed that he was going to purchase an AR-15 and gunpowder and said that he was going to pray to God and "hopefully get justice and still be able to go to heaven."
"I'm not going to go out of this world like a punk," one post read. "I choose my battles, but I have no choice in this one."
A social media post also claimed that Jorczak had been diagnosed with a tumor and that "the best thing about knowing death is around the corner (is that) you can plan for it."
Police said a video was also uploaded by Jorczak to social media on how to make pure napalm in seconds.
Thompson said Jorczak was a respected member of the church until one Sunday when he showed up and threatened people with a cane.
"He almost hit several congregants with the cane while he was swinging it around," Thompson said. "He used a lot of profanity, made a lot of accusations against the church, against members of the LGBT community."
Thompson said the incident has made many in the congregation feel unsafe. He said there is a restraining order against Jorczak, preventing him from coming within 500 feet of the church.
"I have seen his anger," Thompson said. "I can't begin to imagine what he would do with a gun."
