MIAMI - Three family members, including a man who was posing as a dentist with an office inside his home, were arrested Wednesday morning, according to Miami police.
Officers executed a search warrant on the home in the 1000 block of Southwest 11th Street after an undercover investigation.
"It's everything that a dentist office should not be," said Miami Police Major David Magnusson.
According to investigators, a 14-year-old girl who went in to get a chipped tooth fixed had a bridge put in. During the procedure, the girl told Humberto Perez she was in pain, but he continued with the procedure.
The bridge became infected, turning her gums black, said investigators. Magnusson said she left horribly disfigured and lost her teeth.
"You got street level narcotic cops, you got swat officers that, we've seen the worst of the worst, and when the pictures went up as part of the briefing, we cringe and put your head down," said Magnusson. "We don't want to see this, especially on a kid."
Claribel Agramonte, the girl's mother, told Local 10's Baron James in Spanish that she feels good because the arrests were justice for her daughter, despite the fact that she won't return to normal.
The girl is now being treated by a licensed dentist.
Humberto and Maria Perez were charged with aggravated child abuse, child neglect, unlicensed practice of a health care profession, and unlicensed practice of dentistry, and proprietorship by a non-dentist. Odalis Hernandez-Perez was charged with child neglect.
Detectives believe there may be additional victims that have yet to still come forward.
