Marathon woman calls 911 repeatedly while trying to catch bus to Miami

Melodie Aycox, 51, faces charge of misuse of 911 system

MARATHON, Fla. – A Marathon woman was arrested Friday after repeatedly calling 911 for non-emergency reasons, Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

According to Herrin, Melodie Aycox, 51, first called 911 just before noon to complain that she could not buy a bus ticket to Miami and say that a deputy refused to give her a ride to the bus stop.

Deputy Matthew O'Neill met Aycox at the Marathon Visitor's Center and told her only to call 911 for emergencies and gave her the nonemergency number for the Sheriff's Office. He also tried to help her buy a bus ticket and told her where the nearest bus stop was, Herrin said.

Aycox yelled and swore at O'Neill repeatedly before calling 911 again to say that her glasses were broken and she couldn't see, Herrin said. O'Neill said that he could see clearly that Aycox's glasses were not broken and said that she claimed to be blind at one point although she was seen crossing the road on her own with no problems.

Herrin said O'Neill gave Aycox a final warning, telling her that she would be arrested if she continued misusing the 911 system.

Aycox replied, "Take me to jail," Herrin said.

Aycox was arrested on a charge of misuse of the 911 system.
