MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Hundreds took to the streets on Sunday to show their support for the family of 18-year-old Israel Hernandez, who died after he was tasered by police two months ago.
The peaceful protest began on Lincoln road and ended at the Miami Beach police department.
The same department is now being sued by the Hernandez family for the tasering death of the teen.
"I do not know why my brother died. They have not given us answers," said Hernandez's sister, Offir Hernandez.
It has been two months since Reefa died after police said he was caught vandalizing a building and then running from officers.
"We've been broken. Our hearts are broken. Our family is broken. We're devastated with this loss, but thirsty with justice, " said Offir Hernandez.
The Hernandez family wants the officer responsible, Jorge Mercado, to be charged and disciplined.
"That day, that night, that evening, that incident, there was a big mistake made by a few officers, especially Mercado, and we want to get to the truth," said event organizer Fabio Andrade.
"An unarmed teenager died in the hands of Miami beach police. From what we know so far, there does not seem to be any justification for the use of deadly force in this case," said Attorney Jose Javier Rodriguez.
Miami Beach police say Mercado acted within department policy and that Hernandez resisted arrest.
"He was an artist. He was not a criminal," said Andrade.
Hernandez's family said the rally was uplifting as they wait for answers.
"It definitely gives us support and it gives us strength to keep on fighting in this battle," said Offir Hernandez.
