Mating manatees draw crowd

Manatees often beach themselves during mating season

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A group of manatees mating in Pompano Beach drew a crowd Monday.

Beachgoers gathered around the manatees found north of the Pompano Beach Fishing Pier, located at 10 Pompano Beach Boulevard.

Manatees often beach themselves during mating season. They swam away about an hour later.

"It's amazing," said Marta Lopez.

Lifeguards closed the area while they were ashore.
