Miami-Dade Transit building named in honor of employee killed in fire

Katrena Williams, 2 children died in condominium fire

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – The Miami-Dade Transit has renamed its materials management building in memory of an employee who was killed in a condominium fire with her two children last year.

During a renaming ceremony Thursday, the Materials Management Building was renamed the "Katrena Williams Materials Management Building."

"Katrena would be looking at this saying it's never looked this good," said Miami-Dade Transit director Ysela Llort.

Williams, 42, had worked for Miami-Dade Transit for 17 years before the May 21 fire.

The fire started early in the morning on the third floor of Country Lane Condominiums at Northwest 170th Street and 67th Avenue in northwest Miami-Dade County.

Williams' two children, Vincent Williams, 3, and Makayla Williams, 12, also died in the fire.

Authorities said neighbors helped put out the flames, but it was too late to save the family.

Williams' husband, Vincent Williams Sr., also works for MDT. He was not home at the time the fire broke out, but was at Thursday's ceremony along with friends and family members.

"Just to drive by here -- she won't be forgotten," Vincent Williams said.

Williams is also working on providing support for underprivileged children within the Miami-Dade County school system in honor of his two children, and said the renaming of the building is just one step in their family legacy.

"We still have a long way to go," he said. "This is a journey, and I'm so thankful. I could have never imagined this."

Authorities said the fire was accidental and started in the kitchen.
