Medical examiner rules toddler's death an accident

Mariah Johnson found dead Saturday

FLORIDA CITY, Fla. – The Miami-Dade County medical examiner ruled that a toddler whose body was found in a ditch near her home in Florida City died as the result of an accident.

Willie Wilson, the boyfriend of Johnson's mother, was watching Mariah Johnson at the time. He didn't explain how he lost sight of the toddler, whose body was found near the 900 block of West Palm Drive on Saturday afternoon.

"I be around there every day. I would never hurt Mariah," he said. "Never."

Wilson (pictured above) said rumors that he hurt the girl were untrue.

"He did not do nothing to that baby. It's an accident," said his mother, Ernestine Wilson. "God was ready for the baby to go."

No charges have been filed. Homicide detectives are investigating.

"I loved Mariah so much. That was my little girl -- I loved her," said Willie Wilson.

The Department of Children and Families said it has a history with the toddler's mother, but didn't comment further.
