FHP identifies 4 killed in crash

FHP: Miguel Remedio Gonzalez lost control of car

MIAMI – The Florida Highway Patrol identified four people -- including a 6-year-old girl -- killed in a crash Wednesday night on Okeechobee Road.

About 8:40 p.m., 29-year-old Miguel Remedio Gonzalez was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his car north of mile marker 16.5, crossed the median, and slammed into a car traveling south. His car exploded and smoke poured from it hours after impact.

"They don't understand that speed is fatal," said FHP spokesman Joe Sanchez.

The crash instantly killed 47-year-old Arturo Montenegro, the driver of the car traveling southbound. His daughter, 6-year-old Norvel Montenegro, was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she died.

"They are very nice people and always been nice neighbors," said Guillermo Diaz. "It's shocking."

The crash also killed Gonzalez's father, 56-year-old Lazaro Miguel Remedio Palacio.
