MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – The Miami Beach City Commission votes to accept the resignation of City Manager Jorge Gonzalez effective July 8.
Gonzalez sent his letter of resignation to Miami Beach Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and the City Commission on Tuesday, saying he would retire on May 10, 2013.

However, instead of asking for a year before he leaves, on Wednesday afternoon, Gonzalez said he would resign as of July 8 of this year.
"After a great deal of thought, personal introspection, I've concluded that the time is now, so I will be resigning my position effective July 8, 2012," Gonzalez said at the meeting Wednesday.
The Commission voted 5-2 to accept his resignation on those terms.
Gonzalez told Local 10 he is "looking forward to the future."
A couple of hundred people attended the meeting Wednesday, expecting to see a fight over whether Gonzalez would be fired or if he would resign.
Earlier Wednesday, Miami Beach Commissioner Jonah Wolfson said that Gonzalez's delaying of his resignation until May 2013 was "a disrespectful slap in the face to the commission."
"To say, 'We'll do it in a year,' cheats the taxpayers," said Commissioner Edward Tobin.
Gonzalez, who has been the city manager for 12 years, came under fire after five city code inspectors and two fire inspectors were busted on corruption charges. Many feel the city manager should be held accountable for their actions, even though there has never been any accusation that Gonzalez was dishonest.
Gonzalez was earning about $273,000 per year. The terms of his severance package are unclear.
It is also unknown who will succeed Gonzalez as city manager.
