Miami Dade College student convicted in stolen identity scheme

Laquisha Johnson, 24, collected tax refunds for 3 victims

MIAMI – A federal jury convicted a former Miami Dade College student for her involvement in a stolen identity tax refund fraud scheme on  Thursday.

During her time at the college, Laquisha Johnson, 24, opened a bank account serviced by Higher One, Inc, which provides financial services to colleges and universities throughout the U.S.

Prosecutors said tax refunds issued to three different victims were directly deposited into Johnson's account, totaling $63,000.

Thirteen other Miami Dade College students were also arrested in the scheme last November.

Johnson faces up to 10 years in prison when she is sentenced May 27.
