Miami-Dade commissioner calls for license plate law change

Local resident ticketed for license plate cover

Similar license plate covers are a common sight in Florida.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – According to a news release, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz wants state lawmakers to clarify a law against license plate covers.

The news release explained that Florida law makes it illegal to "obstruct any feature or detail on the license plate."

This lesser-known law recently got Miami-Dade resident Robert Blades a ticket for sporting a "Wounded Warrior Project" license plate cover.

Blades received the ticket for his license plate cover that partially covered up the portion of the plate that reads "The Sunshine State" even though the rest of his plate, numbers and registration were visible.

Diaz who also served in the Marines and is a chairman of the Miami-Dade Military Affairs Board, wants the Florida Legislature to change this. He wants the Legislature to update the law so that non-essential features of the plate can be covered by license plate frames, as long as the essential parts of the plate are visible, such as the license plate numbers and registration.

According to the release, commissioners unanimously approved a resolution sponsored by Diaz to urge the Legislature to act on the change.

“The law really needs to be made clearer so well-meaning citizens who just want to help a good cause don’t get hurt unnecessarily,” Diaz said.
