Miami-Dade County Commission approves transfer of road near UM

Resolution is key step in building pedestrian bridge above US 1

MIAMI – The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday approved the transfer of a road needed to build a pedestrian bridge linking the University of Miami Metrorail Station to the opposite side of U.S. 1.

In the spring of 2014, construction crews will build the bridge to cross Ponce de Leon Boulevard and U.S. 1 on Mariposa Court. It's expected to take about a year to complete.

"It's very exciting for students, community members, alumni that have been following this issue," said UM Student Body President Bhumi Patel. "It blew up on social media as soon as it was passed in the meeting, so we're all very excited."

University of Miami President Donna Shalala and various state representatives argued the bridge is needed for public safety.

Eight students have been hit crossing the street since 1989. There were killed.
