MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho took Local 10 on a tour of two schools that'll open when classes begin Monday.
On Friday, Carvalho and Local 10's Michael Putney toured iPrep Academy and the Primary Learning Center, two schools adjacent to Carvalho's administrative office, where he's also the principal.
"For me, the space in which kids learn has to dignify their existence, has to mimic and replicate their lifestyle, has to be comfortable, fun -- and by the way, can we build it in a cheaper way than we traditionally build schools," said Carvalho. "At a time when kids don't move around enough, they don't exercise enough, what's wrong with them having their devices, their iPads, and reading Shakespeare by plugging their iPads -- the visual comes here -- at the same time they do exercise. Why not?"
Carvalho began as a teacher. He now runs the nation's fourth-largest school system with 365,000 students, 23,000 teachers, 50,000 full and part-time staff members, and a $4.3 billion budget.
"This is about delivering the promise of tomorrow to our kids today to inviting, exciting, respectful environments," added Carvalho.
