DAVIE, Fla. – About 5,000 volunteers gathered at Nova Southeastern University on Sunday with the mission to pack 1 million meals for South Florida seniors.
Volunteers worked in assembly lines to make meal packages at the third annual event which is sponsored by AARP Foundation and the Miami Dolphins.
Lisa Marsh Ryerson, president of the AARP Foundation, said that one in five South Florida seniors are food insecure, meaning they don't know where their next meal is coming from.
“(It’s) a big problem and our response has to be equally as large," she said.
The meals include lentils, rice, beans and other non-perishable items.
