Miami man accused of using phony credit card to pay traffic tickets

Deputies say Maurice Ables used Key Largo couple's personal info to apply for credit card

KEY LARGO, Fla. – A Miami man was booked into jail Wednesday, accused of using a fraudulent credit card to pay traffic tickets.

In October 2014, a Key Largo couple called the Monroe County Sheriff's Office to report the fraud. They said someone had used their personal information to open a checking and savings account and apply for a credit card at a Wells Fargo in Oregon.

The couple noticed that someone had transferred $4,000 from their account to the fraudulent account, but they reported it to the bank and were reimbursed.

An investigation determined that Maurice Ables, 20, had used the fraudulent credit card to pay Miami-Dade County traffic tickets online.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin said that Ables admitted to using the fraudulent card to pay off the tickets.

Ables now faces fraud charges.
