SAN ANTONIO – City and state officials from Florida and Texas are making all kinds of friendly wagers over the outcome of the NBA Finals.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro made a wager with each other, as did Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
If the Heat win, Castro promised to send a batch of San Antonio Chef Johnny Hernandez's "El Machito" food to the Magic City, and Perry will send a 3 pound cinnamon roll from Lulu's Bakery and Cafe.
And if the Spurs win, Gimenez agreed to send over some South Florida stone crabs to the Alamo City, and Scott will send Whetstone Chocolates from St. Augustine.
U.S. Reps. Pete P. Gallego (D-Texas), Joaquin Castro (D-Texas), Joe Garcia (D-Florida) and Frederica Wilson (D-Florida) have also agreed to a friendly wager over the NBA Finals.
If the Spurs win the championship, Garcia and Wilson will take a picture wearing a Spurs jersey in front of U.S. Capitol and provide lunch to the staffs of Gallego and Castro.
If the Heat win, Gallego and Castro will take a picture wearing a Miami Heat jersey in front of U.S. Capitol and provide lunch to the staffs of Garcia and Wilson.
"It's exciting to face the Spurs again in this year's finals," Garcia said. "It'll be just as exciting to beat them again, but we look forward to entertaining this friendly wager. Go Heat!"
"I am getting ready to order Miami Heat jerseys for Congressman Castro and Congressman Gallego. I just need to confirm their sizes," Wilson said. "To steal a quote from the great King James, 'I ain't got no worries.'"
In a 4-3 series in 2013, the Miami Heat beat the Spurs, winning Finals.
