Miami-Dade Co. Public Schools, AFSCME reach agreement

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the American Federations of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) reached an agreement Friday on the impact health insurance deductions have on employees while negotiations continue.

"I am very pleased that administration and AFSCME leadership have been able to come to an agreement, which preserves our ability to continue negotiations while reducing the costs of health insurance to employees. This agreement is further evidence of the importance that we as a district place on the dignity of all of our employees," said Miami-Dade School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman.

All AFSCME employees will be allowed to temporarily enroll in the 2014 OAP 20 health insurance plan at new, lower rates effective Jan. 1, 2014.

Employees will also see an adjustment to their paychecks beginning Jan. 24. The paychecks will represent the difference between the new, lower health insurance premiums and those reflected in their Jan. 10 paycheck.

Negotiations will continue in the coming weeks.
