Miami-Dade County under severe drought alert

Lowest amount of rainfall in 7 years reported in May

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade County is under a severe drought alert.

County officials said water levels in parts of the county are now below average.

Officials said one reason is the area has experienced an unusually arid dry season.

In fact, the lowest amount of rainfall in seven years was recorded in May.

The rainy season has also been very slow, and is usually in force at this time to replenish canals and wells to supply water.

Forecasters said little is expected to change over the next two weeks.
