Miami-Dade County's deputy mayor resigns

Resignation of Genaro 'Chip' Iglesias effective July 31

MIAMI-DADE, Fla. ā€“ Miami-Dade County Deputy Mayor Genaro "Chip" Iglesias announced his resignation Wednesday, just a week after Chief of Staff Lisa Martinez resigned.

Iglesias served as Mayor Carlos Gimenez's chief of staff when he was both a county commissioner and the manager of the City of Miami.

He also served as a Miami firefighter and paramedic for 24 years.

"Chip has always placed service to others at the forefront of his professional career and he will be missed," said Gimenez in a statement released Wednesday. "He is a long-time adviser and friend, and I wish him all the best as he takes his skills and talents to the private sector."

Most recently, Iglesias was the point man on the county's negotiations with David Beckham's plans for a soccer stadium in Miami.

Iglesias leaves behind a $225,000 salary. Gimenez said he will not be replacing Iglesias, but that Deputy Mayor Russell Benford would absorb Iglesias' workload.

Iglesias' resignation is effective July 31.
