S. Fla. company offers modern-day message in bottle

Postal Bottles sells 20,000 bottles in 1 year

DAVIE, Fla. – Shipwrecked sailors sent messages in bottles in the 19th century, and now, so can people in current times.

The modern-day message in a bottle is not thrown into the ocean; it is placed inside a mailbox.

The third bedroom in Denise Masak's Davie apartment is the worldwide headquarters of Postal Bottles.

"The dream is to get something bigger and have everybody in one spot, have all of the product at one spot and make it more of an operation," Masak said.

Masak, her husband, her mother and her brother-in-law are all putting in long hours assembling and shipping their product.

"A lot of late nights -- 11, 12, 1 o'clock," she said. "But it's all worth it and we'll see what comes from it."

The process is simple.  Write a message, put it in the bottle, then mail it.  Users can send their scrolls in style on birthdays, special occasions and holidays.

The year-old company has already sold more than 20,000 bottles on the Internet, in gift shops and even to Disney. The bottles and paper are all made in Florida.

"We really wanted to make sure that we use American-made products and be a company that is just 100 percent made in the U.S.," Masak sad.

Each bottle costs about $4.95 and less than that to send. Customers can just drop them in any post office box.
