More than $2.5 million worth of marijuana intercepted near Bahamas

Nearly 3,000 pounds of marijuana confiscated over 3 days

MIAMI – The U.S. Coast Guard helped Bahamian authorities seize more than $2.5 million worth of marijuana during three law enforcement operations in the Bahamas over the weekend.

Officials said nearly 3,000 pounds of marijuana were found on go-fast vessels that were traveling in waters off the coast of the Bahamas.

In addition to the narcotics, two go-fast boats and a vehicle were seized. Six people were arrested.

"OPBAT remains vigilant in its mission to protect citizens of both the U.S. and Bahamas" said Cmdr. Mark Driver, Coast Guard OPBAT director. "The strong partnership (that) U.S. and Bahamian forces enjoy creates a potent deterrent to criminal activity and has resulted in the seizure of over 45 tons of narcotics since October 2014."

The OPBAT task force is comprised of elements from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. Customs Border Protection Office of Air and Marine and the Bahamas Drug Enforcement Unit, a division of the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
