'Mothers of the Movement' encourage people to register to vote at campus event

Organization headed by women who have lost children to gun violence

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ The Mothers of the Movement group came to South Florida on Tuesday to speak about their campaign against gun violence and to encourage others to get out and vote.

The organization is headed by women who have recently lost their children due to gun-violence.

Their childrenā€™s names became known worldwide for how they died:Ā Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland.

Now, the mothers use their tragedy for political change.

"We are the spokesperson for our children, they are not here to speak for themselves," Sabrina Fulton, who is Trayvonā€™s mother, said.

The mothers Ā were introduced to country during the Democratic National Convention.

The trio met at Florida Memorial University, where they encouraged young people to register to vote and use that vote.

"Make sure you show up for early voting, show up at the polls, if you don't vote, see what happens," Genenva Reed-Veal, Blandā€™s mother, said.

The womenĀ  said Ā they closely watch the continued tensions between police and black communities across the country, and feel recent headlines make their mission even more urgent.

"They are more concerned about an athlete that kneels during the National Anthem than the bodies of our babies lying in the streets," Gwen Carr, Garner's mother, said.Ā
