National expert on privacy issues to speak in Broward at ACLU event

ACLU attorney Nathan Freed Wessler, local attorney Harry Dohn Williams and civil rights activist Arnold Abbott to speak at a public event Saturday

PLANTATION, Fla. – ACLU staff attorney Nathan Freed Wessler will be one of the guest speakers at an event on surveillance and privacy to be held in Plantation, Saturday.

Last week, he said he was concerned about cell site simulators known as "stingrays," which trick cellphones into transmitting identification and location. You also have him to thank for the U.S. Court of Appeals for 11th Circuit ruling that requires officials to get a warrant to access phone location data from cellular carriers.

ACLU of Florida Broward County Chapter Annual Meeting will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, at the West Regional Library, 8601 W. Broward Blvd., in Plantation. The event is free and open to the public.

Earlier this month, he told reporters that he was concerned about the new generation of police hand-held radar devices that allow law enforcement officers to see through walls up to 12 inches thick and can detect a person's breathing from 50 feet away.
