"I commend the efforts of the Miami-Dade Police Department in securing this valuable grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. "I have been an early advocate for body camera technology. In fact, I requested that our department study body-worn cameras as far back as 2012. I look forward to its implementation as part of our strategy to enhance the county's technological capabilities so that all patrol officers can eventually have body-worn cameras and better serve our residents."

The Miami-Dade Police Department was one of 285 agencies to apply for grants under the BWC Pilot Implementation Program.

The department said 72 other agencies were also awarded grants.
