New tolls coming to 2 of South Florida's busiest roadways

Tolls open on Dolphin Expressway, State Road 112 this weekend

MIAMI – Drivers on two of South Florida's busiest roads need to know about new tolls that start this weekend.

The tolls are coming to both the Dolphin Expressway and State Road 112, and drivers will now have to pay no matter where they get on and off from those roads.

"If you pay cash -- starting Saturday morning, cash will no longer be accepted," said Mario Diaz of the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority.

Authorities are now cutting out the cash-toll option on the 836 and SR-112 to the airport but they are also adding more tolling points.

"Everybody will be paying for the amount of distance that they drive," said Diaz.

The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority is creating what they call a closed system. Much like the Turnpike, each exit ramp will now have an electronic tolling station and tolling for westbound lanes of both expressways begins this weekend too.

"We believe that a lot of people that can't afford this toll rate increase are going to get off the highway," said Carlos Garcia, co-chairman for Rollbacktolls.com.

Garcia is with a grass roots organization that opposes raising toll rates. He claims this is a 54 percent rise in toll rates for most, even though MDX said it is now lowering rates at certain locations.

"We are expected to make an additional $53 million per year by closing the system and having everyone pay their fare share," said Diaz.

The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority has outlined numerous ramp closures and detours for the roads ahead of the weekend while they test the new tolling equipment.
