North Lauderdale man who said he shot intruder lied, BSO deputies say

BSO: Man came up with story to cover up for girlfriend's son

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. ā€“ A 60-year-old North Lauderdale man who said he shot an intruder who attempted to burglarize his home lied to detectives to cover up for his longtime girlfriend's son, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

After a 911 call made just after 3 a.m. Friday, Louis Campbell told deputies that he heard a noise coming from the backyard of the home at 8161 SW 11th St.

Campbell told deputies that he grabbed his firearm and went outside, where he came upon the intruder and shot him.

Campbell's partner, Rosa Lee, her 34-year-old son, Rahman Lee, and her 14-year-old granddaughter were home at the time of the incident, according to BSO.

No one was hurt except for the attempted 22-year-old burglar, Jeff Jean-Baptiste, who was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at Broward Health North, deputies said.

By the time deputies arrived, Rahman Lee had left the home. As homicide detectives began to verify the details of the morning's events, they found inconsistencies in Campbell's story, deputies said.

Detectives took multiple statements from everyone inside the home and a different story began to unravel, according to BSO.

The investigation revealed that it was Rahman Lee who was involved in the shooting. Rahman said he was sitting on the back porch smoking marijuana when he heard someone open the door of the shed, deputies said.

Rahman couldn't see in the darkness, but saw a shadow moving from the shed toward the patio. Rahman claims that he was startled and scared. Deputies said he shot Jean-Baptiste, who fell backward into the shed.

Rahman was previously convicted of cocaine trafficking and was not supposed to be in possession of a firearm, according to BSO. Fearing that the shooting would land him back in prison, Campbell came up with the story that he told investigators, deputies said.

Detectives said they still believe that Jean-Baptiste's motive was burglary.

Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation, deputies said.
