North Miami Beach police officer recovering after surgery

Lino Diaz shot while executing search warrant

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – After more than four hours in surgery, the family of North Miami Beach Officer Lino Diaz told Local10 they are relieved to hear their loved one is recovering.

"He was a little bit nervous," said Diaz's sister, Suhaill. "It was his first surgery. He didn't know what to expect."

Diaz's 7-year-old daughter even brought him a teddy bear in a sling to calm his nerves before the operation.

A plate has been put into Diaz's arm, according to his sister after the veteran police officer was shot twice.

Relatives said the second bullet will have to remain in his leg for life.

Police said Elton Bandoo shot Diaz twice as the veteran North Miami Beach police officer was helping execute a search warrant off Northeast Eighth Avenue.

Diaz was dragged away and transported to the hospital. Numerous organizations and leagues have been sending their condolences as he continues to recover.

Relatives said he will remain in the hospital for observation and after a few days will begin what is expected to be months worth of physical therapy.

Bandoo remains in jail and was denied bond.

Records indicate the suspect believed he was being robbed when officers went to execute the search warrant.
