North Miami mayor removes red-light cameras from city

No citations to be issued beginning Thursday

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – North Miami Mayor Smith Joseph is removing red-light cameras from all intersections throughout the city.

"You elected me to look out for the best interests of the city, as well as the best interests of the residents," Smith said in a statement Monday. "We cannot balance the city's budget on the backs of our residents.  We need more police on the streets, not more red-light cameras. This is a new day in North Miami."

No more red-light camera citations will be issued in the city beginning Thursday.

The move comes after two Broward County judges ruled that the program, which uses a third-party vendor, violates state statute.
