Nurse speaks about saving Miramar baby after near-drowning

Maureen Brown asked God to help her save 3-month-old boy

MIRAMAR, Fla. – The nurse who helped rescue a baby after his mother allegedly tried drowning him in Miramar is speaking about the incident for the first time.

Maureen Brown said Thursday she knew something was wrong when she spotted a little baby in the grass Tuesday. She stopped her car and saw the child wasn't moving. She said a woman ran towards her car from a few yards away. It was the baby's mother, Inakesha Armour.

"She asked me, 'Can I use the phone?'" said Brown.

Experience immediately kicked in for Brown.

"She looked wet. The baby looked wet," said Brown. "I realized I'm dealing with a drowning case."

The nurse of 22 years knelt down beside the lifeless baby and performed CPR.

"I just was looking at the baby," said Brown. "He was so cute and beautiful, and I asked God, 'Please let me do something to save this baby's life.'"

Brown also called 911. When paramedics arrived, they took over CPR from there. But it's likely that without Brown's actions, the baby would not be alive today.

"I just thank God that I could use my skills," said Brown.

Armour has been arrested on two counts of attempted murder. Police said she admitted to trying to kill her baby by drowning him in a canal and had previously tried killing him by giving him adult cough syrup.

According to the arrest report, Armour told detectives she has been diagnosed and treated for postpartum depression.

A shelter hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday to discuss who will care of the baby once he is released from the hospital.
