Off-duty officer saves man from bleeding to death

Victim taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center

SWEETWATER, Fla. – A man who lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a tree was saved by an off-duty officer after he nearly bled to death from his leg being severed.

Off-duty Officer Jesus Voight-Decaran heard the call and responded to the location of the victim, Paulo Matoso.

Voight-Decaran called paramedics, secured the scene and began to perform first aid on Matoso by applying a tourniquet above the area where the leg was severed. He kept the appropriate amount of pressure on the leg until EMS arrived.

Motoso was transported to Kendall Regional Medical Center, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

"Had it not been for Officer Voight's quick thinking by applying a tourniquet, the man would have surely hemorrhaged to death," said Dr. Orlando Morejon.
