Officer shoots self in leg while chasing robbery suspect

1 man apprehended; Police seek 3 robbers

SWEETWATER, Fla. – A Sweetwater police officer shot himself in the leg Sunday while attempting to catch robbery suspects.

Police were notified by a Dolphin Mall security guard of four robbery suspects who ran outside of the mall after one of them attacked the guard.

The security guard was attempting to stop the men from shoplifting at the Burlington Coat Factory located inside the mall.

Police began a chase with the suspects after they fled the mall. One of the officers was attempting to holster his gun when it went off, striking his right leg.

The officer was taken to Kendall Regional Hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He was later released.

One man, Darius Brown, 18, was arrested. He is charged with robbery, felony theft and resisting without violence.

Police are searching for the other three men.
