Officers recall crash that killed Maritza Medina

3 officers on scene when vehicles crashed at intersection

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – Three of the officers who were at the scene of Wednesday's fatal crash on U.S. 27 recalled how they tried to save the victim's life.

"We do our best. We wish we could have done more. It was a very sad day yesterday," said Miami Dade Police Officer Jonathan Dweck Thursday afternoon.

The first three officers on the scene of that horrible crash instantly made a decision to put themselves in harm's way in order to try and save the life of 48-year-old Maritza Medina.

"She was so close to the suspect's vehicle that there weren't too many choices. She was out in the open," said John Rodriguez of the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Feliu had just led police on a high-speed chase after murdering two people, so the officers knew Feliu was armed.

"I drove my vehicle and placed it tactically between the subject vehicle and the victim's," Dweck said.

"Jonathan and myself loaded Mrs. Medina in the back of my car and we attempted to get her to an ambulance," said John Kelly of Broward Sheriff's Office.

Medina was ejected from the car and was unresponsive when the officers arrived on scene, but they hoped and prayed they could save her. Unfortunately, they couldn't and it has made an enormous impact on them personally.

"I hugged my wife a little tighter and a little longer," Kelly said. "Life is fragile man, very fragile."
