OIG finds Margate commissioner violated ethics during wedding reenactment party

Lesa Peerman accused of accepting free DJ services, failing to disclose charitable donations

MARGATE, Fla. – The Broward Office of the Inspector General announced Wednesday that Margate Commissioner Lesa Peerman violated the Broward Ethics Code's gift ban and solicitation disclosure rules.

Inspector General John W. Scott said Peerman admitted to her actions and agreed to pay a $500 fine for the violations, which occurred at her wedding reenactment party in Margate last year.

According to the OIG report, Peerman accepted $150 worth of DJ services from a business tenant of Margate's Community Redevelopment Agency, for which she serves as a board member.

The then-mayor also told guests at her party on Aug. 2, 2014, that she preferred charitable donations over wedding gifts.

However, Peerman failed to disclose the solicitations online as required by the Broward Ethics Code, the report said.

Peerman has since paid $150 to the CRA tenant and filed the required disclosures with the State Commission on Ethics and the city of Margate.
