Omar Rodriguez shoots neighbor after dog tries to defecate in son's yard, police say

South Florida father arrested after Father's Day shooting

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A South Florida father shot a neighbor on Father's Day because the victim's dog was trying to defecate in his son's yard, police said.

Omar Rodriguez, 66, was arrested Sunday on charges of second-degree attempted murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Miami-Dade police said Rodriguez shot Jose Rey during an argument in the Kendall neighborhood.

According to the police report, Rodriguez admitted that the dispute began when Rey's dog tried to defecate in Rodriguez's son's yard.

Rodriguez told police that Rey was walking his dog when Rey told Rodriguez that "he would be returning to fight him." Rodriguez said he took off his shirt and challenged Rey "to fight him now," but Rey ignored him and walked home.

Later in the day, Rodriguez was waiting for Rey at a neighborhood gathering, where the two exchanged words, police said.

Rodriguez then walked outside, went to his car, pulled a gun out of his glove compartment and shot Rey, police said.

A neighbor told police that he saw Rodriguez fire two shots at Rey. As he called police, the neighbor "(believed) he heard more shots being fired."

Neighbors said Rodriguez was constantly causing trouble for residents. Local 10 News spoke to one neighborhood woman on the condition of anonymity.

"He was bothering all the neighbors," she said.

The woman said she believed Rodriguez bought the house for his son.

Rodriguez was taken into custody without incident. Rey was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center. His condition was not immediately known.
