MIAMI - On this date, hurricane warnings were in effect for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands on this date in 1999 as Hurricane Lenny threatened the islands. Lenny packed winds of 115 mph and was not only unusual because it was so late in the season. It was also unusual because it moved west to east across the Caribbean, making it the first hurricane to approach Puerto Rico from the west.
