One person killed in hit-and-run in Miami, suspect arrested

Witness follows suspect, calls police with vehicle's tag number

MIAMI, Fla. ā€“ A pedestrian was killed Thursday night in a hit-and-run in Miami.

The incident happened in the southbound lane of Northwest 27th Avenue near 16th Street.

According to police, a witness followed the car that struck the man, and called police with the vehicle's tag number.

Officers located the car about two miles away at Southwest 34th Avenue and 5th Street., and arrested the man who was driving it.

He was identified as 27-year-old Alvaro Urquia.

A female passenger, Sofia DeJesus, was also taken in for questioning.

DeJesus told investigators that she asked DeJesus to drive because her arm was hurting. She said that after the crash, she got nervous and told Urquia to leave the scene, knowing he did not have a valid license.

Urquia was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with death, and driving without a license.

DeJesus was released.
