BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Log-in issues have once again delayed South Florida public school students during online testing.
Broward County Public Schools spokeswoman Nadine Drew said all computer-based testing in Broward County was canceled Monday morning because of the glitch.
Public schools in Miami-Dade County also experienced log-in issues as students were taking the Florida Standards Assessment.
The Florida Department of Education notified school officials throughout the state that the testing company's servers were down. Several hours later, students were still unable to log in.
MDCPS superintendent Alberto Carvalho tweeted just before 10:30 a.m., "Today's #FSA vendor-server failure adds doubt to validity of test results. Disruption to & uneven testing environments are unacceptable."
About a half hour later, Carvalho said MDCPS were also cancelling online testing Monday.
"No time to waste @MDCPS," Carvalho tweeted. "Due to @EducationFL's testing platform problems, we are canceling testing for today. The state has not been able to assure us that server problems will be resolved today, so we choose learning over unacceptable testing conditions."
The issues come a month after public schools in both counties delayed online testing for the same reason.
Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart released a statement later in the day that said, "This morning, AIR's President of Assessment notified me of a technical change that was made to the Florida Standards Assessment testing system over the weekend that was not approved by the Department. This change was unnecessary to the administration of the Florida Standards Assessment and resulted in a disruption that hindered students from being able to log in to the system and take their test today."
"We have confirmed that the log-in issue has been resolved and students are currently testing; we will continue monitoring the situation. The company's failure to follow protocol is absolutely unacceptable and the Department will hold AIR accountable for the disruption they have caused to our state's students, teachers and school staff."
A week after the initial issues were reported, the Florida Department of Education said the glitches were caused by cyber attacks on a server used to administer the FSA.
Broward County schools resumed testing Monday afternoon, while Miami-Dade County schools will resume testing on Tuesday.
