Orlando-based robocall operation permanently banned

Fla. attorney general says pre-recorded phone calls misled seniors about free medical alert devices

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A permanent injunction was granted Thursday against an Orlando-based operation that used pre-recorded telephone calls to pitch free medical alert devices to senior citizens by falsely representing that the devices had been purchased for them by relatives or friends, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi said.

The robocalls violated the Federal Trade Commission Act, Florida's Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act and the FTC's telemarketing sales rule.

Bondi said the defendants misled consumers to believe the devices were endorsed by various health organizations and that they wouldn't be charged anything before the devices were activated.

"We must do everything within our power to protect Florida's consumers," Bondi said. "The scheme we have stopped allegedly targeted Florida's senior citizens, and we, along with our Federal Trade Commission partners, have held these individuals accountable."

The defendants are permanently banned from sending robocalls, telemarketing and marketing or selling any medical alert product or service.
