Missing paddleboarder found dead at Hobie Beach

Beachgoers say man had trouble after falling into water

MIAMI – A paddleboarder who was reported missing at Hobie Beach has been found dead.

Miami-Dade police said the body was discovered several hours after the man was reported missing Sunday evening.

Police divers recovered the body several hours after someone called 911 to report that a man had fallen off a paddleboard and was in distress.

Beachgoers said the man, who appeared to be in his 20s, fell off the paddleboard about 6:30 p.m. and disappeared under the water.

"I don't know what happened -- if he was nervous or what, but he was next to the paddleboard," Lourdes Basurto said.

Basurto said she ran for help and one man jumped into the water to try to save the victim while another called 911.

Rescuers with the city of Miami and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue assisted in the search for the man, who is believed to be from out of town.

Police said a witness got on a paddleboard in an attempt to help the struggling man but wasn't able to find him.

Witnesses said the man appeared to have trouble immediately after falling into the water.

"If you can't swim, at least wear a life vest," Detective Argemis Colome said.

The man's identity hasn't been released.
