Pedestrian fatally struck trying to cross road in Pompano Beach, BSO says

Deputies: Man was not crossing in designated crossing area

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A pedestrian is dead after being struck when he attempted to cross a road in Pompano Beach, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

The incident happened at 11:56 p.m. Friday near the 1100 block of West Atlantic Boulevard.

Deputies said the pedestrian was crossing West Atlantic Boulevard from north to south, just east of the Interstate 95 on-ramp.

The man was not crossing in a designated crossing area, according to BSO.

A 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling east in the center lane after proceeding through the intersection to enter onto I-95. Deputies said that's when the side front bumper of the car struck the pedestrian in the center eastbound lane.

The pedestrian was projected in a northeast direction and came to final rest in the westbound left lane 100 feet from the area of impact, deputies said. The driver of the Hyundai was able to stop his car 200 feet from the area of impact.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to the scene. Deputies said the pedestrian was pronounced dead at 12:04 a.m. Saturday.
