Former officer of year Ben Burke out of ICU

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – A Pembroke Pines police officer who was injured in a crash early Monday is out of the intensive care unit.

In a tweet sent by the Pembroke Pines Police Department, Officer Ben Burke can be seen with a neck brace on and petting a K9 officer by his bedside at Memorial Regional Hospital.

Capt. Al Xiques said Burke continues to recover.

Burke, 43, a 19-year veteran and former officer of the year, was seriously injured when his sport utility vehicle collided with another SUV at Pines Boulevard and Douglas Road.

Police are investigating.
